CONFINED SPACE: Safety for Entry and Rescue

Steps on How to Stay Alive

  • IDENTITY
Once an area has been identified as being a confined space, the workers will have a better understanding of what the hazards may be and how they can best protect themselves.

  • TEST
Tests must be taken by competent individuals who are able to properly use the equipment, and interpret and record the results.

  • EVALUATE
Take the necessary precautions. It is now time to determine the best approach to accomplish the task at hand, with regards to safety, equipment, procedures and personnel.

  • MONITOR
Periodic testing or constant monitoring will ensure workers are alerted to any changing conditions, which if undetected, could have grave consequences.

  • RESCUE
If a worker is injured or overcome in a confined space, there must be a means of rescue. Equipment, personnel, communications, a plan and training are all requirements of a safe and effective rescue.
